ABOUT JUSTINE

Screen Shot 2023-12-11 at 8.43.17 AM.png

A long, time journey of painting portraiture and figurative images, since 2006  I have continued this in my later years.as a painter and where this journey will continue to take me.

Spent most of my early years raising my son, and working part time as a health care worker.  So painting was still in the making.

I majored in painting from an Art and Design certificate  in 2005 and went on to complete a Diploma in Art - Te Aka Rakai Toi from 2006 to 2007,  Advanced Diploma in Art in 2008 from Waiariki Institute of Technology and went on to complete a Master of Māori Visual Arts from Te Pūtahi ā Toi, Massey University in 2023.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My artistic practice delves into the depths of the human experience, capturing the fleeting moments of emotion and expression that reside within us all. Through my figurative paintings, I strive to reveal the unseen stories that unfold in our everyday lives, often venturing beyond the surface to explore the hidden experiences that precede and follow public events.

I am deeply fascinated by the human condition and the intricate narratives that lie beneath our outward appearances. My subjects are not merely figures on canvas; they are individuals with unique stories waiting to be shared. Through my art, I aim to offer a glimpse into their worlds, revealing the emotions, vulnerabilities, and joys that reside within them.

My artistic process is a multifaceted exploration of both technique and expression. Primarily utilizing figurative painting, I seamlessly blend drawing and screen printing techniques to create compelling visual narratives. My artistic style is fluid and versatile, ranging from detailed realism to abstract representations, depending on the specific story I want to convey. Each brushstroke and mark reflects my intention to capture the essence of a moment, inviting the viewer to share in the emotional journey of my subjects.

Ultimately, my artwork is an invitation to witness the beauty and complexity of human experience. I believe that by connecting with the emotions and stories depicted in my paintings, we can gain a deeper understanding of our own lives and the lives of those around us. It is my hope that my art will spark conversations, evoke empathy, and inspire us all to explore the hidden depths of the human condition.
